The montage featured clips of the president repeatedly insisting that, under him, the “immense power of the state” would never again “be weaponized to persecute political opponents” and that his administration “has acted swiftly and decisively to restore fair, equal and impartial justice under the constitutional rule of law.”
Capehart said, “Perhaps on Earth 2 that is what Trump did, but for those living here on Earth 1…” He then broke into laughter, apparently at the contrast between Trump’s remarks and his actions since returning to office.
“You guys need to stop,” Capehart told others in the studio who had also burst out laughing.

Capehart eventually composed himself enough to say: “We’ve seen the exact opposite with Trump treating the Justice Department as his own personal law firm, going after his perceived enemies while rewarding his allies.”
He then laughed again before admitting: “We are totally in trouble.”
Later in the show, Capehart apologized for the moment and blamed it on the holiday weekend. He said, “I just want to apologize to everybody; we are all delirious because it was a late night because of the 4th.”
