Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth continued his culture war-laden tenure on Saturday as he maligned Ivy League-educated military leadership in a speech at Texas A&M University.

“For too long, the Defense Department — now the War Department — the leadership looked toward the Ivy League for answers,” Hegseth said, eliciting cheers from the audience.
“Sending our best and brightest uniformed officers to anti-American campuses that actively disdain the uniform, rewrite our history and undermine our national resolve. Sending our uniformed class to campuses that hate our country. Those days are finished,” he continued.
While Hegseth has made a habit of bringing culture war issues into the military, his excoriation of Ivy League institutions is undercut by the fact that he holds degrees from two of them.
Hegseth holds a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a master’s degree from Harvard.
His criticism of Harvard shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone due to a stunt he pulled while working at Fox News.

During an episode of “Fox & Friends Weekend” that aired in June 2022, Hegseth wrote “return to sender” on his Harvard diploma and vowed to send it back to the university.
His co-host, Rachel Campos-Duffy, asked the future defense secretary: “Is your Mom going to be mad?”
“Very,” Hegseth said. “I don’t think my wife’s going to like this either.”
“I think it should be renamed ‘critical theory university,’” Hegseth said of Harvard. “Every single department has a critical theory department.”
