The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it is investigating claims from a hacking group of stealing the data of thousands of bureau employees ― including information on their spouses.

“The FBI is aware of claims regarding unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov and is currently investigating,” the FBI National Press Office said in a statement Tuesday.
The statement comes after the cyber group ShinyHunters said it had compromised several repositories of sensitive information “on all FBI employees and applicants.”
“We have compromised the FBI,” ShinyHunters said in a statement. “We hold very sensitive data on almost ALL FBI Agents and individuals who filed an application with the FBI for a job. Whether it be a Special Agent or any other role within your agency. The following FBI services were compromised: Criminal Justice (CJ), HR, Medlink, and more.”
A member of the group gave a sampling of data regarding roughly 5,000 individuals to 404 Media, which first reported the story, and verified the information included FBI agents’ names, home addresses, phone numbers and information on their spouses.

ShinyHunters said the hack was over “false allegations” against the group by the FBI.
“We were severely offended,” the statement added.
The website, FBIJobs.gov, currently includes a banner that says “System Unavailable.”
“Apply.fbijobs.gov and the Special Agent Applicant Portal are currently unavailable,” the website read as of Tuesday evening.
A person with knowledge of the hack told Politico investigators are taking the potential breach seriously.
“It’s really bad,” the source told Politico.
