Noem, the former Department of Homeland Security secretary, took aim at Musgraves on Monday after Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico shared photos of himself with the Grammy-winning singer.
Noem pettily declared that she prefers country singer Ella Langley “over Kacey Musgraves any day.”
“And If I’m choosin’ Texas, I’ll take Ken Paxton over James Talarico,” she added, referencing Talarico’s controversy-engulfed Republican opponent in the 2026 midterm elections.
Talarico currently enjoys a narrow lead over his rival in polling.

Musgraves, a Texas native herself who met Talarico at her performance at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on Saturday, didn’t let Noem’s dig lie and hit back with a one-liner about one of the most infamous controversies of her political career.

Musgraves was referring to Noem’s startling admission in her 2024 memoir, “No Going Back,” that she had shot and killed a dog named Cricket, her 14-month-old wire-haired pointer.
Noem wrote that Cricket had behaved aggressively and was difficult to train as a hunting dog, describing her as “less than worthless.”
