Earlier this year, Illinois-based board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jessie Cheung put a name to those hard, tiny white bumps that often appear around the eyes with age. Milia, she previously told us, are actually cysts that sit just under the surface of the skin, formed when dead skin cells are trapped instead of shedding naturally. Although incredibly stubborn and most effectively removed by manual extraction in an office setting, Cheung did say that there are a few products that you can use to prevent them, notably this one anti-aging facial cleanser that’s 30% off for a limited time.
According to Cheung, milia commonly develop with age because, as time marches forward, our natural cell turnover slows, so dead skin cells are more likely to accumulate and get trapped.
“At the same time, many patients start using thicker creams for dryness, which can further occlude the skin and contribute to milia formation,” she said in our previous covergae.
This is why Cheung recommended the Olay Smoothing facial cleanser as a useful product to have in your milia-preventing arsenal because it includes a retinoid, an ingredient Cheung said “is the gold standard” because they normalize cell turnover and prevents keratin from getting trapped.
“Preventing milia is all about keeping skin turnover steady without clogging the pores,” she said.
Cheung also said that because this is a wash-off cleanser, it’s inherently gentler and less irritating, which is great for people with sensitive skin or who are new to retinoids, which tend to cause irritation.
This creamy cleanser also contains peptides, ingredients that we’ve been previously told by dermatologists can promote collagen production that supports firmer skin, as well as niacinamide, an antioxidant that can fade dark spots and balance oil production — another benefit for milia-prone faces.
Many reviewers of this Olay formula have dubbed it their favorite cleanser for how notably soft it leaves their skin and how it doesn’t irritate even the most sensitive of skin types.
“Anything and EVERYTHING breaks me out,” one Amazon shopper said. “I could not use anything besides baby soap on my face. I got this, and I have been using it for a while now. Not one breakout. Skin is smooth, and it smells so good and makes my skin feel so fresh.”
Another reviewer pointed out that this gentle and non-foaming cleanser contains the same key ingredients as their anti-aging creams.

“This cleanser seems to add moisture and tightening even before you apply your facial cream. Will order again,” they said.
Cheung reminded us that although the tendency is to compare milia to acne, the two conditions are different. But for all their differences, the products and ingredients used to prevent them are very much the same, and not just one product or formula will do the trick. But if you want to try this dermatologist-recommended cleanser that can do more than just prevent milia, grab a bottle while it’s 30% off.
Promising Amazon reviews:
“3rd repurchase, so I have been using this for a while. The is a creamy lotion consistency, that I rub on like a moisturizer and rinse off, which mildly cleans and leaves a conditioned feeling residue. This extra nice conditioning is amazing at bedtime or after a workout when you want a freshen up. I do notice a smoothing from the formula with retinol, but it is not my only cleanser. This is so very gentle and safe for sensitive skin types.“ — Miamiac
“Sensitive skin people this is for you trust me !! Anything and EVERYTHING breaks me out I could not use anything besides baby soap in my face I got this and I have been using it for a while now not one break out skin is smooth and it smells so good and makes my skin feeling so fresh 10 out of 10 must have” — Shelby
“My favorite facial cleanser. It could be that the ingredients are the same anti aging as my facial creams, but this cleanser seems to add moisture and tightening even before you apply your facial cream. Will order again.” — Lynne
“I really love this cleanser! I’ve been using it for several weeks now on my mature skin of a 59 year old. I feel like it truly is nourishing my skin as it cleanses my makeup off. No, it does not have a foaming lather feel to it, but YES, it cleanses well. Just because I’ve read about double cleansing and how that’s better for your skin…..I double cleanse at night to take my makeup off….but only cleanse once in the morning shower with the Smoothing Olay wash. I highly recommend this cleanser. (And nobody paid me to say this!). :)” — Rick/Lisa Monday
“I only need a pea-sized amount each time because a little goes a long way. It feels soft and gentle on my face and leaves my skin feeling smooth and silky after every wash. The bottle contains a generous amount of product, so it’s definitely worth the price. This is the best facial cleanser I’ve ever used, and I’m so happy I decided to try it. I will definitely keep buying it.” — Joie D.
If you want to shop for more dermatologist-recommended face cleansers, take a look at the upcoming options from previous HuffPost coverage:

A famed hydrating cream cleanser
The CeraVe hydrating cream cleanser may be one of the most recommended cleansers at HuffPost, and, as someone with extremely dry skin that can’t handle the oil-stripping effects of most foaming washes, it’s my cleanser of choice.
A board-certified dermatologist claimed that this non-foaming, fragrance-free, and milky cleanser effectively gets rid of dirt and buildup without leaving the skin feeling dry and without using any harsh surfactants.
They said that it contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin as well as ceramides to support and strengthen the skin barrier.

A non-drying antioxidant cleanser
A makeup artist previously recommended this cult-favorite gel cleanser by Youth to the People, which is rich in phytonutrients, antioxidants, and superfood extracts that help support the skin’s pH balance and address visible signs of premature aging caused by environmental stressors. Additionally, the inclusion of ingredients like spinach can soothe stressed-out skin and impart essential fatty acids to the skin.

A maximum-strength benzoyl peroxide wash
A board-certified dermatologist once recommended this foaming acne wash that features a concentration of 10% benzoyl peroxide, the highest amount of benzoyl peroxide you can get over the counter. Chang loves it for its maximum-strength antimicrobial properties that kill acne-causing bacteria and lift dirt from pores.
