I’ll admit, I was skeptical that spending more than $200 on headphones would actually make a difference. But after finally saving up for the WH-1000XM5 and using them for years, I can confidently say I was wrong.
The audio quality is excellent, with crisp highs and deep, rich bass. But what really makes these headphones worth the money for me is everything beyond the sound: The noise cancellation is fantastic, the microphone is clear and they’re comfortable enough to wear all day, even with my glasses.
They’ve become the pair I reach for whether I’m listening to a full album at home, working at a coffee shop or traveling on the go. They’re especially handy while on an airplane, when I need that noise-cancellation to block out the ear-popping nonsense.
Reviewers seem to agree that the sound quality is great, rivaling other brands on the market. One deems them “better than Apple AirPods Max,” and another says they’re “better than my Apple AirPods Pros and Samsung Galaxy Buds.”
Sony’s WH-1000XM5 headphones are comfortable, well-padded and feel pretty dang good over your head — I’m talking pillowy soft.
They’re USB-C rechargeable, have a battery life of up to 30 hours (I barely charge mine), feature eight microphones for crisp audio for phone calls and FaceTime and have superb active noise-cancelation that blocks out distractions as needed.
I find that ANC is pretty great for deep work and virtual therapy, helping me block out any ambient room noise and the outside traffic that usually disrupts my thinking. They also come in a protective carry case to stow away and bring along for travel, and keep them out of harm’s way.
It’s also loaded with a ton of features and pairs well with its SonyConnect app.
It’s in the app where you can toggle ambient mode, in case you’d still like to hear what’s going on around you while they’re on, and an equalizer to control your highs and lows. They also have an adaptive mode that automatically adjusts to your environmental noise, turning down the volume as needed.
My favorite feature, and probably the most convenient, is their auto-pause — once you take them off your head, your headphones pause whatever you’re listening to and automatically resume when you put them back on. They come in four colors: black, pink, silver, and blue.

“The Sony WH-1000XM5 are, hands down, one of the best noise-canceling headphones I’ve ever used. The sound quality is fantastic, with a balanced, clear sound profile that works well across all genres. The noise cancellation is top-tier, effortlessly blocking out background noise whether you’re traveling or just in a noisy environment. Comfort is excellent, with plush ear cups and a lightweight design, making them great for long listening sessions. Battery life is superb, offering up to 30 hours of use, and the quick charge feature is a nice bonus. The design is sleek and minimalist, though they do feel a bit delicate. Overall, the WH-1000XM5 are an outstanding choice for anyone looking for premium audio quality and industry-leading noise cancellation.” — Aron
“These are the best noise canceling headphones I’ve ever owned. I bought them for work after trying several pairs that claimed to be noise canceling and weren’t. These actually work.
They’re extremely comfortable and go around your ears instead of pressing on them, so I can wear them all day with no pain. They also stay put. I can bend down, move around, and clean without them slipping.
The noise canceling is impressive. Once they’re on, everything around you fades out. Call quality is excellent too. People hear me clearly, even when I’m walking around, and I’ve never had any complaints.
Sound quality is great for both calls and music, and I love the touch controls. Being able to swipe to change songs without grabbing my phone is super convenient.
Battery life easily lasts all day as long as you turn off the setting that keeps them on when you’re not wearing them. If that’s left on, they will stay powered on and drain the battery.
I originally bought these just for the office, but I love them so much that I take them home and use them there too.
I liked them enough that a coworker tried mine and ordered a pair immediately. Well worth it.” — Shainia H.“These headphones really live up to their hype. Very lightweight and full of rich, deep sounds. The noise cancelling is as close to perfect as any headphones I have ever tried, including the Airpods Max from Apple. However, the Sony XM5s give you more control in shaping your sound and you can wear them a lot longer due to their lighter weight.
I just got them for 50% off of the original price which made even easier to purchase. Thank you Amazon.” — Amazon Customer“My wife bought me the XM5’s for my birthday because I had heard that they were even better than the XM3’s I had and the Apple AirPods Max. What I had heard was not a lie! these things are great!
Most importantly, they are lighter than the earlier model and much lighter than Apple’s. The head strap is smooth, works well. The fit around the ears is tight but not smothering and the sound quality is magnifique! Not as bass-y as the AirPods Max, which is ok with me. Great clarity. No sound leakage with the NC. Comfortable for long periods of time. Nicer case than previous models, slimmer. I’ve only had them a couple weeks but I’m getting ready to sell my and the Apple headphones.”— RichardB
