With the legendary Snoop Dogg hosting and none other than Madonna as the opening act, it was clear Sunday’s ceremony at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater was engineered for pop culture perfection.

The event featured 22 fan-voted prizes alongside a slate of special honors, tributes and performances that marry MTV history with today’s hottest acts.
While 1990s grunge idols Nirvana were crowned with this year’s Video Vanguard Award, Taylor Swift received the first Artist Director Honor and returned the compliment with the video premiere of her new single, “Patient Zero.”
Kacey Musgraves paid homage to late country diva Dolly Parton, and George Michael’s musical legacy was honored by artists RAYE, Sombr and Teddy Swims.

The rest of the night featured performances by Lisa, Sienna Spiro, Shaboozey, GENER8ION, Gunna and Yung Lean, in addition to appearances by pop bad girl Charli xcx, “Superman” star David Corenswet, “Survivor” host Jeff Probst, “SNL” alum Rachel Dratch, Oscar winner Teyana Taylor and more.
Dishing on what gives the VMAs its special sauce in a Friday interview, producer Van Toffler told The Hollywood Reporter the magic has always been in the “bitches brew of eclectic artists” MTV brings to one stage.
