Mamdani’s Awkward Body Language During Press Conference With Trump Speaks Volumes, Experts Say

President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani hosted a joint news conference at the mayor’s residence on Monday that body language experts read as an awkward and uncomfortable position for Mamdani.

The two met privately at Gracie Mansion for an hour before walking out to the press, which the president had not been scheduled to attend. Mamdani then stood next to Trump as the president slammed “fake news,” defended his decision to ban CNN, Politico and MS NOW from White House grounds, and then claimed he won the 2024 election in a landslide.

“I told the president that we’re going to have all the members of the press here on the lawn, and that is something that I believe in for everyone,” Mamdani said before welcoming Trump to the podium.

“It’s interesting because they said they were going to boycott me, but they never boycott me,” Trump said. “I wasn’t very worried about that. Look at all that press.”

As Trump continued to speak, some viewers noticed Mamdani, who stood off to the side and looked onto the press pool in front of them, blinking a lot. Susan Constantine, a body language expert, told HuffPost this is likely Mamdani trying to contain his anxiety.

“Because of the high stakes of that press conference, that’s what’s creating this rapid eye-blinking,” Constantine said. “He’s trying to contain it in his non-verbals.”

Constantine classified it as “high cognitive load,” which is when someone feels overwhelmed and, even if they are trying to present themselves a certain way, it causes physical tension and nervous responses like blinking.

Trump, on the other hand, is very expressive, Constantine said, and tries to connect with Mamdani.

“There’s a couple of times where President Trump looks over at Mamdani, which is what we call a confirmation glance, like trying to connect with him, because President Trump is a connector,” Constantine said. “And Mamdani is just kind of soldier-like. He’s not going to move. He’s not going to budge. He’s just staying there, expressionless, except for his eye-blinking.”

Constantine’s interpretation addresses an ongoing question about the relationship between these two men beneath their differing political alignment.

Because the ideological gap between them is so extreme — a self-described democratic socialist mayor and a president who described democratic socialists as the “biggest threat to our nation” — every public interaction between the pair seems to be analyzed.

The two insulted each other a lot during Mamdani’s mayoral campaign in 2025, with Trump calling Mamdani a “100% Communist lunatic” and Mamdani calling Trump a “despot” who “betrayed the nation.” But the tone seemed to shift when they met in the Oval Office in November 2025, and the president praised Mamdani.

“Nonverbally, this looks like two people who are very comfortable engaging with one another, despite how far apart they may be politically,” Abbie Moroño, a behavioral scientist, told HuffPost. “You don’t see either of them repeatedly stepping away, closing themselves off, turning their body away or looking as though they are trying to bring the interaction to an end.”

Mamdani reportedly orchestrated Monday’s meeting with Trump after their most recent meeting in February, when Mamdani made an unplanned visit to the White House.

“What stands out most to me nonverbally is how comfortable Trump appears around Mamdani,” Moroño said. “He stays close to him, repeatedly turns his body and attention toward him, and there are several moments of informal physical contact.”

Both experts noted that these dynamics were especially pronounced at the end of the press conference.

“Trump gives him a double tap on the arm, and earlier, he pauses on the way to the podium to continue speaking with him privately,” Moroño said. “Those are all small behaviors, but together they create a very warm interaction rather than one that feels guarded.”

Mamdani, meanwhile, seems to prioritize cordiality.

“At the very end, when Mamdani then does make a confirmation glance, it’s almost robotic,” Constantine said. “He’s just doing the motion for appearances, and you can actually see that because he doesn’t connect with [Trump] the same way — he doesn’t pat him on the shoulder, he doesn’t show an eyebrow flash, he doesn’t show a cordial smile. It’s what we call Duchesne, which is like just slightly cordial, [but] not anything that has any sort of meaning.”
