CNN political director David Chalian on Tuesday highlighted a brand-new poll from the network on President Donald Trump and his ongoing war on Iran, arguing that voter confidence in Trump’s handling of the conflict marks “the worst number” for him across the entire survey.

“CNN has a brand-new poll out this morning that finds just 29% of Americans approve of how the president is handling foreign affairs,” “The Situation Room” co-host Pamela Brown explained. “This is a new low in CNN polling across both of his terms as president.”
Chalian joined the program after CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins asked Trump about the poll results as he was entering the United Nations building on Tuesday. The president responded by raging at her and reminded Collins of his controversial new press ban.
The survey findings released earlier that day, however, appeared to speak for themselves.
“So we asked, ‘Do you think the United States is winning the war in Iran?’” Chalian explained. “This is the finding that Kaitlan was just asking the president about … Nearly two-thirds, 64% in our poll, say no, the U.S. is not winning the war in Iran. Two-thirds of Americans say that.”
The CNN-SSRS poll conducted between Sept. 16 and 17 showed that a whopping 70% of 1,206 polled U.S. adults said the war has “hurt” America, with 75% further stating that they believe Trump does not have a “clear plan” for handling the situation.

Chalian referenced yet another serious question on Tuesday: “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Donald Trump is handling the situation in Iran?” He noted that only 26% of respondents approved, and said, “I think this is the worst number in the poll for him.”
“And I want to say something about that number: That was 33% back in March,” Chalian continued. “This has never been a popular war,” he noted, adding that the drop in approval since then is “largely driven by Republicans abandoning the president on this issue.”
The CNN Washington bureau chief added that Trump is “down 13 percentage points in Republican approval” regarding his handling of Iran, which resulted in Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz — through which one-fifth of the world’s oil passes — and driving up gas prices.
“This war is nothing short of a political disaster for Donald Trump,” Chalian concluded.
