MS NOW host Lawrence O’Donnell on Monday slammed President Donald Trump over his unbridled “jealousy” of one former president, attributing Trump’s obvious sense of “horrible inadequacy” and latest fixation to the individual.

“That president was John Fitzgerald Kennedy, a Harvard graduate who had won the Pulitzer Prize as an author before winning the presidency,” O’Donnell said Monday. “Jack Kennedy won the presidency with a winning margin of less than 1% of the vote.”
He continued, “And so it’s safe to assume that half the country were not exactly Kennedy fans during his presidency. But the most fervent supporters of JFK were like the most fervent supporters of the greatest musical stars of that era: Frank Sinatra, Elvis, the Beatles.”
The “Last Word” host argued this is why Trump is so determined to demolish the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., unless his name is restored to the exterior. It was removed in June after a federal judge ruled the addition was unlawful.
O’Donnell noted there was visible “swooning” for Kennedy during his time and that Trump himself likely saw people walking home in tears when the former president was assassinated in 1963, including “men carrying their tools” and “New York City police officers in uniform.”
Trump is facing disastrous approval ratings ahead of the midterm elections in November and banned several major news outlets from the White House last week. O’Donnell argued that the president’s latest vanity project betrays a “hatred” of someone he just can’t shake.

He explained, “Someone who fills Donald Trump with the most painful feeling he can ever experience: jealousy. The feeling of jealousy fills a narcissist like Donald Trump with the feeling of horrible inadequacy, the feeling that someone is better than he is at something.”
Trump has grown fixated on his legacy amid his plummeting popularity, launching construction of a new White House ballroom, renovating the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and planning a triumphal arch. O’Donnell noted Trump even released his own commemorative coins.
While attorneys for his administration that the Kennedy Center is in such disrepair it “cannot survive, either structurally or financially” without the president’s help and credit, O’Donnell wagers the real reason is far more personal.
“Donald Trump knows the emotional spell JFK cast on the nation in death,” he said. “He saw the public schools being renamed after President Kennedy. He saw New York’s biggest airport being renamed after JFK. He saw streets all over the country change their names.”
O’Donnell concluded Monday, “All of those commemorations are why Donald Trump hates John F. Kennedy, because John F. Kennedy in the reflection of history has been commemorated with love — and that now fills Donald Trump with uncontrollable jealousy.”
