New Insults Fly Between Fox World Cup Hosts — And There Might Be Some Venom There

The Fox Sports World Cup broadcast team is delivering rounds of roast-worthy insults and just enough tension to make one wonder if there isn’t a little venom in the barbs.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic kicked off the latest exchange by telling co-host Rebecca Lowe, who was wearing a black dress, on Sunday: “You dressed up like you’re going to a funeral. Alexi is alive, don’t worry.”

Alexi Lalas, a Donald Trump-praising former U.S. World Cup star, admonished his colleague with an “easy, bug guy.” He then snapped back at the white-suit-wearing Ibrahimovic, a former Swedish great who played for Paris Saint Germain and many other clubs.

“You look like you should be welcoming people to Fantasy Island,” Lalas said, referring to Ricardo Montalban’s character in the 1970s and ’80s series.

Zlatan Ibrahomvic: “Rebecca, you look like you dressed for a funeral. Alexi (Lalas) is alive, don’t worry.”

Lalas: “You look like you should be welcoming people to Fantasy Island.”

He wasn’t wrong:

Former French star Thierry Henry was again caught in the crossfire but didn’t seem to mind.

Lalas and Ibrahimovic have been sparring for much of the tournament. When Lowe mentioned Lalas had left, Ibrahimovic said, “Who?”

“Your plan worked, Rebecca. America, you’re welcome.”

Things also got chippy between the two men over whether France was “arrogant” or “confident” before springing to life in a first-round victory over Senegal.

Lalas suggested the French could afford the arrogance. Ibrahimovic kicked back hard.

“It’s not arrogance, it’s confidence,” he said. “Ignorant people will say it’s arrogance. Intelligent people will say it’s confidence.”

Complex wrote that the two have “become must-watch television.”

But The Guardian didn’t share the same opinion. The outlet called Ibrahimovic “a dud” and Lalas the equivalent of the Iran war: “No one wants it, everyone hates it.”
