On Wednesday, The Washington Post published a report that sheds light on what the president is willing to do to “leave his imprint on monumental D.C.” — which apparently includes building a $600 million death trap that is partially funded by taxpayers.
According to the report, James McCrery II, the first architect assigned to work on Trump’s White House ballroom, resigned in October after the two clashed over Trump’s original designs (which the president reportedly mocked up with his trademark black Sharpie, highlighting his passion for the project).
Anonymous sources who have knowledge of the discussions between Trump and McCrery told The Post that the architect “repeatedly” warned Trump that his favored design violated safety codes, like required emergency exits and fire-containment measures.
Trump rejected McCrery’s warnings, per the report, saying that safety codes do not pertain to White House construction, and summing up his position with four truly obnoxious words.

“I am the code,” Trump reportedly said.
The Post notes in its report that the little-known Executive Residence, an office that’s not required to follow federal rules, is overseeing the project.
In a statement to The Post, the White House said McCrery’s exit from the project had nothing to do with the fire and safety code issues and insisted all such questions “have been addressed and resolved continuously as the design has evolved.”
Yet, whether or not a code review into the project was ever completed remains a mystery, The Post reported, citing a White House official’s note from November 2025, that read: “Life safety — needs POTUS buy in.”
Although the Post obtained White House documents that show that “discussions about the life-safety deficiencies in the ballroom’s design continued for months after McCrery resigned,” it’s still unclear if more recent designs by Shalom Baranes Associates, the architecture firm that replaced McCrery’s firm late last year, have done anything about it because the firm declined to comment to the Post.
