CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday spelled out exactly why Donald Trump’s boasts about backing free speech and the free press just don’t add up.

Tapper aired a brief video of Trump previously claiming he wants “total freedom of the press” and saying that “if we don’t have free speech, then we just don’t have a free country.”
The anchor then quipped: “Welllll, Mr. First Amendment has turned out to be anything but.”
Tapper said, “We have seen the president target free speech. Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert come to mind. But his disdain for freedom of the press is even more direct. Doesn’t go through oligarchs.”

Just last week, Tapper noted, the Justice Department “took the outrageous step of subpoenaing four New York Times journalists after their report on safety concerns over the president’s Qatari-gifted Air Force One plane.”
He also pointed out the irony of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announcing a task force to crack down on leakers at the Pentagon, even though he himself was involved in the Signal-gate scandal.
Targeting reporters is “just downright un-American, and it’s just the latest in a string of deeply concerning escalations,” said Tapper, noting multiple previous instances, such as the Trump White House’s ban on Associated Press reporters for the organization’s refusal to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Trump-desired Gulf of America.
