Italy’s Prime Minister Pulls No Punches With Trump — And Social Media Users Love It

There’s a good chance Donald Trump didn’t like Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s fiery retort to his claim that she “begged” to take a photo with him at the recent G7 summit.

However, the social media reaction to Meloni’s scorched-earth Trump takedown was overwhelmingly positive.

In an interview broadcast Friday morning on Italy’s La7 network, Trump claimed that Meloni had “begged” him for a photo together, and added that he agreed to do it because he felt sorry for her.

Meloni quickly rejected Trump’s claim on social media, calling his anecdote “completely fabricated” and insisting, “Italy and I do not beg.”

In addition, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced he was canceling this weekend’s previously scheduled trip to the U.S. and called Trump’s claims “serious and offensive” toward his country and the prime minister.

Here is Meloni’s post with the comments translated by MeidasTouch.

Here are Italian PM Meloni’s remarks about Trump, translated to English:

“So certain things deserve an immediate response. Donald Trump’s statements are completely made up. I am frankly stunned.

I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves this way with his own… pic.twitter.com/7jdMcoX4ca

Considering how polarizing Trump is, Meloni’s take-no-prisoners response attracted a lot of positive support.

This dust up with Italy is a perfect example of many of Trump’s missteps. He tells a blatant lie without any reason, just because he has to sound like people are so willing to grovel to him. The false story gets him nothing and the fallout costs the United States.

If this is the incident in question, Meloni really doesn’t look like she’s begging Trump for anything. Could Trump possibly have been lying? https://t.co/X4pw6n4Ezw pic.twitter.com/TNHteUaDsV

Americans are so accustomed to Trump saying something false and insane without pushback or consequence that he must’ve assumed he could take that show on the road with no issue. https://t.co/YPxIHIqobu

Only she has the guts to call out his bullshit outright

Disagree with her politics all you want, she’s a woman single-handedly showing every other male leader in NATO how it’s done https://t.co/QDxcN6w5aq

If you think Meloni seems pissed, remember that she recently gave up smoking as well, so she’s probably even angrier than that. https://t.co/iaGmuDtRnD

One thing that sucks about trump is that he lies constantly for no reason https://t.co/O3GvcQBwn4

Incredible (and real, not fake) thrashing of Trump but the PM who was at one time probably his strongest supporter in Europe (aside from the departed Orban) https://t.co/xGWGM8vCei
