One of President Donald Trump’s favorite pastimes seems to be blaming his predecessors for the state of the economy, most often former President Joe Biden. But a new poll shows that nearly two years into Trump’s second term, many Americans aren’t buying that excuse.

According to a Politico poll published on Thursday, 43% of Americans said Trump was either mainly or fully responsible for the current state of the economy, including 21% of Trump voters. In contrast, only 28% of those surveyed said they believe Biden was mainly responsible.
A majority of respondents also said the top issue facing Americans was the rising cost of living.
Trump and Vice President JD Vance have continued pushing the narrative that the administration inherited its economic issues from Biden.
“I hope everyone realizes that price increases throughout America were caused by Sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden Administration, not by ‘TRUMP,’” Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday.

Vance repeated that claim while pleading with voters to give the Trump administration “one more chance” in the midterm elections.
“There’s a lot of good that’s been done, but there’s a lot of work left to do. Don’t give power to the people who cause the problems that we’re fixing. Give us another chance, or give us another couple of years, to continue to work on the amazing things that we’ve been doing for the past two years,” Vance said during Tuesday’s edition of the “All-In” podcast.
Whether Trump and Vance’s attempts to pass the buck to Biden and the Democrats will allow Republicans to keep control of Congress in November remains to be seen. But the president’s historically low approval ratings suggest Republicans are in for a rough midterm cycle as Trump’s war on Iran continues and gas prices remain high.
Polling averages compiled by The New York Times currently have Trump with a 38% approval rating and a 59% disapproval rating.
