Someone in a giant Panda suit who had their back to Holmgren swept out their Panda arm, which apparently struck Holmgren as she tried to duck.
“Nearly taken out by a panda!” a stunned announcer said. “I did not have that on my bingo card for this race.”
Her colleague added, “She took a bit of a blow there.”

Holmgren, a Canadian riding for Lidl-Trek, eventually finished 6th in the stage around Nice, France, and 8th overall. (Demi Vollering of the Netherlands won her second women’s Tour de France.)
“The main goal was just to learn,” Holmgren told Canadian Cycling. “It’s my first Tour and I’ve never experienced something like this before. We have the best team and it’s so nice to learn from all of the girls and have them there to support.”
It’s also likely she had not experienced a near-collision with a human Panda either.
