Michael Steele, the chair of the Republican National Committee from 2009 to 2011, on Wednesday delivered a damning critique of the GOP midterm convention that is taking place in Dallas this week.

On MS NOW’s “The Weeknight,” where he now hosts, Steele explained exactly what he believes is wrong with the event and why something similar would never have happened on his watch.
“Look, bottom line is, this is crazy land, this is an unmitigated mess,” he declared, after airing footage of Trump trying to dismiss why some Republican lawmakers aren’t attending the two-day shindig that’s been dubbed “Trumpapalooza.”
“I wouldn’t be doing this crap, I wouldn’t be doing this crap right now,” Steele continued, adding that the whole thing is “stupid.”

Why?
Steele explained that he would “not pull candidates out of districts where they’re highly competitive and they need to be on the ground” and also “would not ask them to spend money out of their coffers to get to such an event.”
It speaks “to the inability of the party to actually do what a party is supposed to do and build out a ground game and infrastructure and resources to help candidates win elections, particularly when they’re up against it in a situation where the titular head of the party just can’t get what he needs to get to deliver to the base,” he added.
