CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten on Monday highlighted a massive economic “switcheroo” that could spell bad news for Donald Trump and Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Enten noted that during the 2024 election campaign, full-time workers trusted Trump over Democratic rival Kamala Harris on the economy by 20 points, in what was “a major strength” for the then-GOP presidential candidate.
But there’s since been “a complete 180,” he said, with Trump’s net economic approval rating among the same group now at -41 points.
“Way down there we go, down into the Hudson River,” Enten said. “It is not a happy Labor Day indeed for President Trump when it comes to how those who are employed view him on the economy.”

Enten also pointed to growing pessimism among workers about the job market.
In 2024, “54% of those in the workforce said it was a bad time to find a job” and now it’s 72%. Inversely, the 46% who thought it was a good time to find a new job has now sunk to 28%, he said.
“So those who are in the workforce, simply put, do not think it is a good time to find a quality job, and that bad number has only climbed ever higher,” Enten said.
