Vance, speaking Thursday at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California, said the Watergate scandal that ultimately led to the downfall of former President Richard Nixon just wouldn’t be a big deal today.

“As I joked with Robert backstage, if Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12-hour news story,” Vance said. “The idea that it would have taken down a presidency is crazy.”

Filling in for regular host Chris Hayes on Friday’s episode of “All In,” Soboroff repeated Vance’s remark to let it sink in.

“Watergate would be like a 12-hour news story. That’s what he said,” Soboroff told viewers. “That is a pretty telling confession.”

As Soboroff put it, “If you have looked at Donald Trump’s America and thought to yourself, ‘Man, it is worse than Watergate on a daily basis’, turns out you’re not really alone.”

The host also touched on JD Vance’s comments on “how the deep state took down Richard Nixon,” which the vice president called “not all that different” from the “same institutions” trying to take down Trump.

“JD Vance is just sayin’ out loud what Republicans under Trump have been suggesting for years,” Soboroff said. “It is a lot easier to rule if you don’t have to worry about gettin’ in trouble for doin’ crimes.”
