Torres, who plays his club soccer for Barcelona, shared photos on Instagram of himself wearing the cap, which resembled one of President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” hats.
Images of Torres wearing the hat have also gone viral on social media.
It is not clear why Torres wore it.
Some commentators suggested it was a tribute to Trump.
Indeed, the Trump White House seized on the moment, sharing Fox News footage of Torres with the caption: “Everyone wants in on the movement.”

Others, however, have argued that the hat was intended to mock the president, noting that Trump had predicted an Argentina victory and has repeatedly attacked Spain’s government in recent years. Trump also became a meme at the final itself when he lingered onstage during the trophy presentation.
Torres has so far not explained his decision to wear it.
HuffPost did not immediately hear back from the Royal Spanish Football Federation or representatives for Torres for clarification.
