President Donald Trump on Sunday suggested that Canada could face some form of penalty from the United States over smoke from the nation’s massive wildfires that’s come across the border.

A reporter on Air Force One asked the president if he had decided on a “retaliation” for Canada over wildfire smoke, as he had threatened last month.
“I have, yeah,” the president replied. “And you’ll find out about it soon.”
When the United States has wildfires, Canadian fire agencies often help. But with more than 800 wildfires burning across Canada sending smoke into the United States, several Republican lawmakers, along with the president, have threatened Canada instead.
It’s not clear yet what form that penalty may take ― but it will likely be on top of the 50% tariff Trump announced just last month on most Canadian goods. The president said it was in retaliation for what he called discrimination against U.S. cars, booze and dairy products.

He’s also repeatedly attacked Canada for years, for any number of reasons, and openly mocked the nation’s prime ministers as the “governor” of the 51st U.S. state.
Trump also withdrew an offer for Canada to be part of his “board of peace” for Gaza after Prime Minister Mark Carney received a huge ovation in Davos for a speech urging “middle powers” to stand up to the United States.
