President Donald Trump delivered a bizarre rant about his so-called expertise on Venezuela and how it related to his previous ownership of the Miss Universe beauty pageant.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump made the odd comments after being asked when elections would be held in the South American country following the ousting of Nicolás Maduro earlier this year.
“For a long time I’ve known that country, and you know, I owned the Miss Universe pageant, and Miss Venezuela always did very well in that pageant, so I know something about the country,” Trump said.
While Trump isn’t technically wrong that Venezuela is doing “very well,” since Miss Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe four times during his tenure, it’s unclear what insight this gives him into the country’s politics.
Among those winners was Alicia Machado, who won the year Trump bought the pageant in 1996. Trump reportedly fat-shamed Machado at the time, according to a 2016 report from The Guardian.

“She was the [Miss Universe] winner and, you know, she gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem — we had a real problem,” Trump said on Fox News in September 2016.
Machado claimed during the 2016 presidential campaign that Trump had previously called her “Miss Piggy.”
In addition to bringing up his Miss Universe ownership, Trump said he doubts elections will take place in Venezuela any time soon, even after Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) suggested they would happen next year.
“As far as the elections in Venezuela, they are not really ready for them yet, but boy, a lot of progress has been made,” Trump said.
